Blueprint for Belonging

The Stakes

UC Berkeley's Othering & Belonging Institute created Blueprint for Belonging, a curriculum to help people working for social justice gain new analysis and strategies. It needed materials facilitators could teach from and participants could hold onto.

The Constraints

• Several formats in one system: a facilitator guide, handouts, and a slide deck.
• A broad range of organizing tools and concepts to tie together.
• Materials for live sessions led by facilitators, not just for reading.

Key Decisions

• A color spectrum as the organizing system. I used a vibrant color spectrum to tie the breadth of tools together, so every piece reads as part of one curriculum.
• Striking key images. Bold key images anchor the materials and carry across print and screen.

The Outcome

Blueprint for Belonging is still in use. It was also my first major project with the Othering & Belonging Institute, the start of a relationship that has since included Trumpism and Its Discontents, the Othering & Belonging Conference, and the Artists Circle on Climate Displacement website.
