The Stakes

Life is Living is a long-running free festival in Oakland celebrating art, environmental justice, and community. Youth Speaks needed a deck to make the case to donors and community partners.

The Constraints

• Years of festival history and iconic imagery that longtime supporters would expect to see.
• It still had to feel current, not nostalgic.
• Two audiences: donors and community partners.

Key Decisions

• Film texture with modern color. I paired nostalgic film textures and pastels with bold contemporary tones to connect the festival's past to its present.
• Oakland residents up front. Photos of Oakland residents are featured prominently, so donors see the community the festival serves.
• Cut-out images on color blocks. Isolated photos on contrasting color fields keep a wide range of imagery cohesive.

The Outcome

The deck supported fundraising for the festival, which was funded and held, as it has been every year it has run.
