Trumpism and Its Discontents

The Stakes
Trumpism and Its Discontents collects papers from UC Berkeley's Othering & Belonging Institute critiquing the causes and implications of Trump's political ideology and presidency. The editors needed a cover and layout that matched the critical but sober tone of the essays.
The Constraints
- A politically charged subject for an academic audience.
- A cover that avoided caricature without going bland.
Key Decisions
- No caricature. I avoided imagery that mocked or demonized Trump, in keeping with the essays' tone.
- A familiar symbol. I used the red MAGA hat to evoke the president and his ideology.
The Outcome
The book was published by Berkeley Public Policy Press in 2020.
